A fresh, new space that honors the past

Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA)

Originally designed by world-renown architect Louis Kahn, the 1970s-era Elm Street Dining Hall required a significant renovation to meet the changing needs of PEA students and replace aging systems and components. The Academy also desired to increase seating capacity and upgrade the kitchen, dining, and serving areas. The renovations were meticulously planned and built to preserve the integrity of the Kahn design.

ARC’s creative phasing of the work allowed us to use the building throughout each academic year and ultimately to create a much-needed new gathering and community experience for our students.

ARC’s design integrates historic features of the Louis Kahn original with modern, efficient systems and expanded natural light throughout – achieving a seamless fit of modern materials with original character. The renovations occurred in three phases during summer months to keep the dining hall operational during the academic year.
