Bristol Myers Squibb’s (BMS) Biologics Development Building (BDB), the winner of ISPE’s 2017 “Facility of the Year,” is an important addition to BMS’s expanding Devens, MA campus. Serving to reinforce interaction and collaboration among the various scientific teams on the campus, the BDB links to an existing lab/office and manufacturing building via pedestrian bridge connectors. The building was completed in 2016, with the first two floors built-out initially and the third floor held as shell space. In three major lab sectors, perimeter workstation zones utilize open office furnishings that incorporate small group tables to promote immediate team collaboration. Prior to designing the third floor fit-out, ARC worked with BMS to complete a post-occupancy survey of building users occupying the lower floors. Based on the results, the collaboration zones on the upper level are more densely populated with a variety of small to medium-sized conference spaces, both of which experience the highest levels of daily use in all of the campus buildings. The design accommodates the need for secured access to certain lab spaces and expands lab spaces out to the exterior walls, accommodating an increased amount of equipment to support quality teams.
