The Art of Acoustics
Spaces for film viewing are intentionally designed to be acoustically dead to eliminate unwanted echoes and reverberations, ensuring that sound is delivered with precision and clarity. This creates an optimal auditory environment where viewers can fully immerse themselves in the cinematic experience, without distractions from unintended noise. In the renovation of Eager Auditorium, we strategically incorporated acoustic panels and soft surfaces throughout the space to achieve this effect.
Carpeting replaced the original hard flooring to absorb sound and reduce noise from foot traffic, while acoustic wall panels in a dynamic linear pattern not only enhance sound quality but also add a striking visual element. The main ceiling surface was treated with a gray acoustic tile to maintain consistency in sound absorption, while a dropped black acoustic ceiling, which folds up across the ceiling from the black screen wall, creates a dramatic focal point. This feature not only contributes to the acoustical integrity of the space but also serves as a creative architectural element, forming a cove that houses accent lighting. Together, these design choices create a visually compelling and acoustically refined environment that transforms the original classroom and elevates the overall film-viewing experience.
