Philip Laird, President of ARC, and I recently attended the AIA New Hampshire Excellence in Architecture Awards dinner and were delighted to receive two honors for the ARC-designed Keene Family YMCA facility in Keene, NH.
I was on hand, as the Project Manager, with Philip, the Principal-in-Charge of the project, along with YMCA representatives and Trustees to receive a Merit Award for Design. While accepting the award, Hélène Mogridge, CEO of the Keene Family YMCA, proudly stated, “the Y has members that range in age from 6 months to 95 years and since the new facility was completed membership has grown from 700 members to 6,500 members.”
Jury comments included “we were impressed with the successful use of the pre-engineered steel building construction type. There is a strong use of elements and a composition that punctuates the box in artful places. The architects successfully worked within the restraints of a limited budget.”
The project also won the People’s Choice award in the commercial category! We are thrilled that the project received recognition not only for its design but was also recognized by our peers as a notable project.
The Keene Family YMCA was designed to fit comfortably within its rural landscape. The 65,800 sf facility includes a competition-size swimming pool and therapy pool, as well as a basketball court, an indoor track, a two-story climbing wall, gymnastics facilities, squash and racquetball courts as well as a lounge and childcare center.
