Work Under Way at Deerfield Academy
11.21.11 / ARC
Construction of a 30-bedroom student dormitory and three faculty residences at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA has begun. The project is designed by ARC, which has completed 12 projects at Deerfield Academy in the past 20 years. The new dorm will be ready for students by August.
ARC’s Philip Laird, who serves as principal-in-charge, notes that the project incorporates numerous sustainable design elements, including passive solar design, thermal solar panels, and a super-insulated building enclosure. Burlington, MA-based Erland Construction is general contractor for the project.
The two-floor, wood-framed dorm building will have 22,000 square feet of space with a partial basement and an unoccupied attic. In addition to bedrooms and faculty apartments, the building includes two study rooms, a laundry room, and a common area for students. The project includes storage rooms for faculty and students, as well as an exterior covered bicycle storage area and exterior terraces for faculty use.
